an adventure with time

Why a clock? The story takes time to tell. Through the development of The Clock, we found ourselves thinking more deeply — much more deeply — about what a clock means. Here is a piece of our adventure with time.

I want to sleep well.

I want to sleep well.

Sleeping deeply. It came so easily as a child. As an adult, it takes effort. Days are full. Tomorrow is already on your mind. For the past few years, I'd been playing rain sounds on a tablet to help me fall asleep. But none of them were quite right. And there was something else: a phone on the nightstand — a social device — seemed connected, somehow, to the quality of sleep.
That's when the idea came to me. What if there was a personal clock, made with modern technology, that played beautiful rain sounds while you slept?

So what should this clock look like? The design of The Clock began with a simple problem: in a dark room, you can't see the hands. What if we removed the hands entirely and let the dial itself emit light? But there was a condition: we didn't want it to look like it was glowing. We wanted it to look as though it had been painted white.
Simple-sounding desires are often the hardest to fulfill. The work was immense. An almost unbelievable number of ideas were required, and the parts that brought them to life were made through processes that most manufacturers wouldn't consider. But what light and its movement ultimately made possible went far beyond what we originally imagined. From there, Light Hour took shape.

This pursuit is connected to a certain encounter.
Sir Jony Ive and his design firm, LoveFrom.
Through our collaboration on the Sailing Lantern, we came to know a group of partners who have spent decades refining advanced manufacturing techniques.
One of those partners is now involved in producing components for The Clock.
Without these encounters, it may have been difficult to reach this level of precision.
While LoveFrom was not involved in the design or development of The Clock,
their presence has been an important part of our journey.
Thank you, Jony.

All tracks were created by a team of in-house designers and collaborating musicians. Working with real-world recordings and live instruments, each layer was carefully composed by hand. There was one challenge that came up again and again. The team kept falling asleep. Too relaxed.
Among all the tracks, my personal favorite is "Long Rain." A summer night turning toward autumn. Rain falls softly on the grass, and crickets call. Drops gather and fade into the distance. Thunder rolls far away. With the depth of the acoustic system, you feel as if you are there. A deep sense of calm. I hope you feel it too.

something human

something human

The Clock chimes on the hour. (It can be turned off through the app, of course.) At that moment, the dial light swings like a pendulum. To get the motion exactly right, the design team visited the National Museum of Nature and Science to study Foucault's Pendulum in person. The complex light movements in Relax Time were inspired by the flicker of distant city lights and the shimmer of stars.
When we first conceived of expressing time through light, the goal was practical: better visibility. But once we added motion, something more became possible. Time became organic. Warm. Human. Every movement of light and sound in The Clock is guided by that humanness.

"the time" and "time"

"the time" and "time"

Product development usually begins with physical phenomena -- what chemical changes create the perfect toast, for example. This project was different. We found ourselves thinking about something philosophical: time itself.
We noticed a distinction between two things that are often treated as the same. "The time" -- the grid of hours and minutes that structures human society. Important, of course; you can't be late to an exam or an interview. But "time" — something greater. It has been flowing since long before clocks were invented. In a sense, we live beneath it, not above it.
We wanted time well spent. That became everything.

ease, and something like peace

A few months have passed since a prototype of The Clock arrived in my home. Two things have changed in how I live.
The first is how I spend the hour before sleep. Every night in the living room, I turn on Relax Time. With soft rain and crickets filling the room, I no longer feel the urge to look at a glowing screen. I've started reading again.
The second change: I now leave my phone in the living room when I go to bed. When was the last time I slept in a room without a social device? Decades, probably. What I found in that bedroom was something unexpected: ease, quiet, and the feeling of being able to stretch out completely.
I can't recommend it enough.
