Product Stories: Chapter 1

Start with one employee

It was in 2001 that Barumuda’s founder, Terao Gen, went on to make things.

1990, 11 years ago. Terao, who dropped out of high school and went on a journey to wander the Mediterranean coast for a year with a little change of clothes, a book, writing instruments, and a walkman, traveled on the Spanish land by bus or on foot. Ask yourself something. It was also at this time that I learned that “the best tools are needed to do the minimum”.

Returning to Japan and devoting himself to music activities to become a rock star, the dream of music did not come true. Terao is frustrated for the first time if he really wants something that doesn’t come true. When I thought about the next action from the music that I did as much as I could, I became aware of the importance of everyday tools through computers and desk chairs that I used to produce music.

Encountering a Dutch design magazine was an opportunity to change into the world of manufacturing. I was greatly inspired by articles introducing designers’ proactive proposals and powerful activities. “I want to make better tools with my own hands” The days of self-study on design and product development began while moving the body.

Terao first went to Akihabara’s electric town, asked people about the characteristics of the materials and the structure of the product, and absorbed technical terms related to industrial products and manufacturing one by one. Standing in the vast land of design and product development, it is advancing while drawing a map on its own, which way to go east, west, south and north.
